android pie message notifications not working

The people that have the default tone it says their name, 'Messages - Conversations. I have tried tapping 'Not a conversation' and have had no changes. I have noticed that on the 2x persons that it does work properly, in this 'Notification Category' subheading, it says their name, 'Messages - Default settings.' I have tried Googling but I am having no luck as most folk discuss the absence of notifications, not the wrong ones. I open a conversation, press the 3 dots, tap Notifications under OPTIONS, tap ADVANCED and then on Sound I set the notification sound.

The notification sounds have remained for 2x persons, but the rest of the people are with the default sound. The problem now is following the update (and I have updated the apps too), the tones are mostly gone. The ~7 people I text on a regular basis have specific text sounds so I know who they are and it can help with my productivity, such as my boss has a tone, my coworker, my mom, my boyfriend, etc. I have now encountered a very annoying problem.
